MPP, Administrative, At-Will, Full Time, Telecommute eligible (work onsite as scheduled and/or as requested and telecommute as scheduled) Position Description Job Summary Reporting to the Vice President for University Personnel and CHRO, the Associate Vice President for Academic Personnel (AVP) is responsible for providing strategic leadership to advance a wide variety of mission-critical academic initiatives and projects.
In addition, the AVP provides leadership and management of the personnel and functions of the Academic Personnel Department.
The Vice President has a dotted line reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and serves as a strategic partner with the Office of the Provost, deans and academic administrators within Academic Affairs.
The AVP will lead aspects of and/or participate with a variety of Cal Poly and CSU initiatives including our DEI strategic goals for recruitment retention and climate, the implementation of a CSU Common Human Resource System (CHRS), the graduation initiative, and other similar large-scale initiatives with system-wide and university-wide implications.
In addition to these initiatives, the AVP will take on an active leadership role in campus based academic initiatives such as fostering partnerships that draw upon strategic collaborations intended to support and enhance existing academic programs and resources, leading the effort with the colleges to collect and analyze data in support of closing Academic Affairs and the university's strategic initiatives, academic affairs strategic planning efforts, continued emphasis on the diversity, equity and inclusion in faculty recruitment, and other broad-based critical initiatives called on to lead and/or support.
Department Summary Academic Personnel supports faculty, staff, and administration regarding implementation of the Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement, as well as the implementation of the Academic Student Employee Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Academic Personnel provides support to approximately 1500 faculty unit employees (tenured and probationary faculty, lecturers, counselors, librarians and coaches), academic student employees (teaching associates, graduate assistants and instructional student assistants), and academic management employees.
The Academic Personnel office supports these employees in organizational development and effectiveness, position management and classification, recruitment and retention, employment, compensation, personnel policies and records, professional development, sabbaticals and other leaves, employee relations, labor relations/collective bargaining, performance management, succession planning, employee recognition programs, academic HR information systems (HRIS), and employee information security.
The Academic Personnel office works closely and collaboratively with the Human Resources office and is responsible for the documentation of comprehensive personnel actions for more than 1500 academic employees, and for developing business processes for each of these actions.
The functions of the office have a broad impact on a wide range of academic employees, academic departments, colleges, and other units including the Academic Senate, Extended Education, International Center, Graduate Education, Academic Programs, Library, Athletics, Counseling Services, Information Services, Grants Development Office, Cal Poly Corporation and other administrative offices.
Education and Experience Advanced degree from an accredited university in labor relations, human resources management, public administration, business administration, organizational planning/policy or a related field and/or a terminal degree that satisfies eligibility for a tenured full professor appointment in an academic department of the University.
At least ten years of increasingly responsible academic and administrative experience in a college or university, which should include experience in faculty personnel management, labor and employee relations, and contract and grievance administration.
Salary and Benefits The anticipated hiring range for this role is $185,000 - 220,000.
Note that the offer is calculated based on the background and relevant years of experience of the individual selected.
